About The Providence Senior Living
When does The Providence open?
The Providence is coming soon to the Capital Region, but you can reserve your future home! Members of our priority list will be among the first to select their residence.
Where is The Providence located?
Centrally located near the conveniences of Colonie, the attractions of Downtown Albany and Troy, and the beautiful nature of the surrounding areas, The Providence is at 96 Menand Road, Albany, NY 12204.
What is nearby?
The campus sits just outside downtown Albany, with easy access to full-service and emergency healthcare at St. Peter’s Hospital, Albany Memorial Hospital and Albany Medical Center.
The area is also home to Ganser-Smith Memorial Park and the Schuyler Flatts Cultural Park, both within the village of Menands. Shopping, dining and entertainment are similarly close, and the campus is accessible from I-787, I-90 and I-87, with Albany International Airport and the Amtrak station just minutes away.
What makes The Providence different from other senior living communities in the area?
The Providence Senior Living is grounded in nearly 200 years of service and stewardship on this land. The Daughters of Charity, who arrived in Albany in 1828, still live on campus.
The community is operated by Franciscan Ministries, a mission-driven, not-for-profit organization. The campus itself, 25 acres in Menands, is one of the most distinctive settings in the Capital Region.
And as a Life Plan Community, The Providence offers something most communities in the area do not: continuing care, priority access and long-term financial protections, all in one place.
Life in our community
What types of residences are available?
The Providence offers three styles of living space, all maintenance-free:
Carriage Homes: For independent living residents, these are single-level, detached residences with private entrances, full kitchens and outdoor space
Villas: For independent living residents, these are spacious, multi-room residences with private entrances, designed for those who want room to entertain and spread out
Apartment Homes: In-building residences across independent living, assisted living and memory care, with direct indoor access to dining, fitness, programming and gathering spaces
Is The Providence pet-friendly?
We welcome residents to bring their beloved companions with them. Please contact our team for details on our pet policy, including any size or care requirements.
What is the dining program like?
Dining at The Providence is guided by FreshKitchen, Franciscan Ministries’ in-house dining program. FreshKitchen brings scratch-made, locally sourced meals to every table, with seasonal menus, resident-inspired favorites and flexible dining options. The dining room is restaurant-style, with linen service, table service and the warmth of neighbors who feel like old friends.
Are there lifelong learning opportunities?
Yes. The Providence will offer educational and enrichment programming through Franciscan Ministries University, designed to spark curiosity and keep minds active.
Through relationships with nearby institutions such as Siena University, Skidmore College, Union College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and University at Albany (UAlbany), we create a vibrant community where curiosity is encouraged and meaningful experiences continue to enrich everyday life.
Is there spiritual programming?
Yes. Spiritual life is woven into the programming at The Providence, reflecting the legacy of the Daughters of Charity and the values of Franciscan Ministries. Religious services, reflection groups and faith-inspired programs are welcoming of all traditions.
Life plan community & financial planning
What is a Life Plan Community?
A Life Plan Community, sometimes called a Continuing Care Retirement Community or CCRC, offers a continuum of care on one campus. Residents can transition between care levels as their needs change, whether that means moving from independent living to assisted living, or accessing memory care, all within the same community, with the same team and the same neighbors. The Providence is designed for lifelong living.
What types of Life Plan agreements does The Providence offer?
The Providence offers a Life Plan that offers a balance of upfront investment, long-term cost protection and financial flexibility:
- Type B: The Modified Life Plan offers a more accessible entrance fee with a 20% preferred rate on future care services. Refundable options of 80% are available.
Our team is happy to walk you through the details of each option during a personal consultation
Are there tax advantages to residency at The Providence?
Yes, potentially. A portion of your entrance fee and monthly service fees may qualify as deductible medical expenses under Section 213(d) of the Internal Revenue Code.
Three planning strategies are worth discussing with your financial advisor, including deductions tied to IRA withdrawals, Roth IRA conversions and ongoing monthly fee deductions. The Providence is pleased to provide documentation to support your planning process. We recommend consulting a qualified tax or financial advisor for guidance specific to your situation.
Care & support
How is an appropriate care level determined?
Before move-in for assisted living or memory care, our licensed care team conducts a comprehensive assessment to understand each resident’s health history, preferences and daily routines. This assessment shapes a personalized care plan from day one and is reviewed regularly as needs evolve.
Is care personalized for each resident?
Yes. Every resident receives a personalized care plan that adapts over time. Our team takes the time to truly know each resident, their history, their preferences and what brings them joy, so that care feels supportive rather than clinical.
What happens if a resident's care needs change?
As a Life Plan Community, care can increase or decrease as needs change, all on the same campus. A resident may begin in independent living and later transition to assisted living or memory care. If a condition improves, a return to a higher level of independence is equally possible.
How does The Providence support residents living with Alzheimer's or dementia?
Memory care at The Providence is guided by our Ancora program, a holistic, person-centered framework built around dignity, familiarity and meaningful daily experience.
Our team is specially trained in dementia and Alzheimer’s care, and programming is built around each resident’s individual history, preferences and sources of joy. Families are active partners in the care from day one.
How can families stay involved in care decisions?
Family collaboration is central to the care model at The Providence. Families are invited to participate in care plan meetings, receive regular updates from the care team and are always welcome to speak directly with staff. We believe the best care happens when families and care teams are in open, ongoing conversation.
